 James Priestley & Dan Berkson
James Priestley (Secret Sundaze / Go!Zilla) & Dan Berkson (Poker Flat / Crosstown Rebels), were a prime choice to remix the Kissogram single. Having already had an underground smash success with their mix of Spektrum's cheeky punk/electro stomper 'Horny Pony' as well as a credible reputation for their skills on the DJ and production circuit, the pair's minimal, techy rework of 'My Friend Is...' - with splashes of Italo disco - will propel them into the 2007 canon of remixers du jour. |
 Flash Atkins
Flash Atkins, aka Manchester's very own Ben Davis, has, as well as producing a plethora of his own creations, has had studio liaisons with a host of top producers that include Shaboom, Del 5 and Troffman. The Flash Atkins moniker is Ben's solo trip and has released records on Twisted, WEA, Paperecordings and Transfusion. Flash has also built up a songwriting relationship with Crazy Penis' vocalist and main writer Danielle Moore under the name of the Bionics. The dubby downtempo Flash Atkins remix of the Jeans Team 'Nonstop...' has brought rave reviews from Mr.Scruff and DJ magazine, and has tempted the more laid-back DJs to sprinkle a bit of Atkins magic over those barmy summer nights which are upon us. Flash Atkins' version of Kissogram's 'My Friend Is A Seahorse' is the most original and quirky offering on the DEFSIX6 release. Unusual, innovative, inspirational - this is a must-have for music fans everywhere. |
 Mock & Toof
Mock & Toof were the bubbling under act of 2006, with their highly acclaimed remix of Hot Chip's 'Over & Over'. But that was then, and this is now.
With a forthcoming remix of 'She's My Man' by some NY band called the Scissor Sisters, as well releases of their own material on Tiny Sticks, it looks like 2007 will be their year. Mock & Toof's mix of 'My Friend Is A Seahorse' by Kissogram is a truly remarkable sublime slice of tripped out disco electronica. |
 Zoo Brazil
Stockholm production duo John Andersson and Johan Emmoth are the brains behind monikers Zoo Brazil, LAID, Cuba Computers and Outcold. The pair have steadily carved out a reputation as one of dance music's most innovative and respected production teams. Their 6 year career thus far has spawned over 60 singles and 40 remixes, which have appeared on more than 20 top drawer labels. Their prolific reputation has seen them working with global artists such as Fatboy Slim, Human League and Dirty Vegas as well as with the cooler end of dance music with the likes of James Holden, Blaze, Zoot Woman and Ian Pooley. Their treatment of 'Hot Flashes' by New York funk-disco outfit 33Hz is destined for steamy dance floors this summer. |
 Magik Johnson
Dick 'Magik' Johnson, one time resident at Manchester's Hacienda, has now fled his Northern manor for the more sunnier climes of New Zealand, where he still spends far too much in his studio fiddling about with various knobs. Johnson's music has been released on a variety of influential imprints such as Danny Tenaglia's Twisted, Layo & Bushwacka's End Recordings, KAOS in Portugal and Paperecordings. He has also remixed for Crazy Penis, DJ Sneak, Joey Negro, Q-Burns, Human League, Neon Heights, NRK, FFrr and Red Melon. Johnson has recently received a gushing media flurry over his bouncy club hit 'Jump/Malone' which was released on Darren Emerson's Underwater. His remix for My Robot Friend's 'Isolation' - a Joy Division cover - is a pure Manchester meets Kiwi throwdown, the result being rather outstanding. |
 Ladytron
Ladytron is the ideal name for this group. The music consists primarily of girls singing (there's the lady) and weird robotic synth-derived sounds (the tron). And apparently, the name was inspired by a track off Roxy Music's 1972 debut album. Ladytron's dance-pop art-primitivism touches upon numerous musical points between then and now, which include Kraftwerk, Devo, Suicide, Gary Numan and New Order. All of which is delivered with self-mocking Eurotrash glamour. If you want guitars, then you're looking in the wrong place - their remix of Kissogram's 'My Friend Is A Seahorse' for defDrive is an unexpected and unusual slice of electro-pop alt. country. We hope you love it as much as we do. |
 My Robot Friend
These days New York's My Robot Friend is in big demand. As a robot with flashing lights and flame throwing metal penis it comes as no surprise that he has been signed to Glasgow's Soma Records. But we here at defDrive, who befriended the Robot several years ago - who by day is called Howard Rigberg - have been able to bag an exclusive single for the label, a Joy Division cover of 'Isolation' and soon-to-be-smash hit 'America Is Automatic'. We have also managed to persuade MRF to remix the superb Jeans Team single 'Nonstop...' which has transformed the cloppy melodic original into a bonkers electro workout. A absolute must-have. |
 Melnyk
Melnyk is a refreshing addition to the global electro scene. His minimal melodic blend of electronic music ranks him amidst the renowned talents of Felix da Housecat, Tiga, Ewan Pearson and Black Strobe. His eclectic approach to producing music makes him stand out above the rest, by not only his strong grasp of songwriting, but his ability to cover a wide range of feelings and moods - he doesn't just pump out electro beats for the dance floor. His recent hit remix of Pet Shop Boys single 'I'm With Stupid' has propelled him off to those heady muso heights, so we're honoured to have him remix My Robot Friend's 'America is Automatic' which will be winging its way to you this September. |
 Christopher Just
Remember that global underground smash 'I'm A Disco Dancer' that came out a zillion years ago? Well that was Austrian techno-genius Christopher Just. Christopher has since given up raving to take up healthy living and a pair of trainers, and has released his first new album in eight years, 'Roland Flick Fairmount Princess 1527', which is really rather good. Christopher has become a vital addition to the defDrive campus with his tongue-in-cheek, ironic ode to early 90s house with his remixes of 'Crazy All The Time' by New Yorkers 33Hz. Rave on! |
 NIYI
New talent Niyi s a Central St Martin's fashion drop out and pioneer of 'the new black', who has already won over a legion of fans that include Erol Alkan, Neil Tennant and Mark Moore. As well as DJing and promoting his Gauche Chic parties across London, Niyi is also signed to hip indie label, Tummy Touch, which will soon be releasing his debut album. Niyi's version of the Puppetmastaz' 'Midi Mighty Moe' throws the original into a dark and electrifying cauldron of heavy basslines and addictive, explosive acidic splatterings. Be afraid - this remix is nothing short of epic. |
 MASH
DJ and broadcaster Martyn Henderson, aka MASH, has braved the Joy Division cover and turned in a housey-grooved killer - look out, murder on the dancefloor! MASH has been producing, remixing and releasing records in Glasgow for the last 16 years, having won over fans such as Mylo, Switch and Fat Boy Slim. This lad knows how to start a party. No debate. |
